# Monday setup · AI-semi bid returns into Jackson Hole week

*Mark Ramos · Founder · August 17, 2026 (retrospective)*

Fourth in the retrospective Monday setup series. Context, not calls.

## The setup going in

Monday August 17 opened into what looked like a narrow, tech-only tape. Nasdaq-100 futures were up around 0.5% on strong AI-spend read-through from the weekend — storage and semi names (Sandisk, Micron) were bid pre-market. S&P was only +0.1%, Dow was actually down 0.2%. That narrow read matters: the *breadth* of a rally tells you as much as the direction.

That’s the “with you” side, and it was leaning heavily on QQQ, SOXL, and TQQQ.

The “against you” side had two pieces. Wednesday’s FOMC minutes were the real event of the week — three dissents were in play, which meant the market was going to trade compression Tuesday-Wednesday morning, then expansion after the 11:00 AM PT release. Second, Brent crude was closing in on $90 on Israel-Hezbollah escalation, with the dollar at a three-month low. A gap-and-go crude headline was the most likely thing to invalidate an equity-long bias intraday.

## What Trding was reading

**Frame** on QQQ was uptrend, bar at MIDDLE moving toward HIGH, channel expanding. Uptrend is real, but the location is starting to demand better setups — not the low-hanging pullback longs of a week earlier.

**Momentum** was STRONG on QQQ, EXTREME on SOXL — which is the classic “leveraged expression running hotter than the index” read. That combination almost always fires HIGH-grade signals on the leveraged tickers early in the session, then dries up midday as the rally cools.

**Nodes** — this is where the week got interesting. SOXL had fresh demand zones from the prior week’s pullback, which were about to be tested if the tape softened before the FOMC minutes. QQQ’s supply zones overhead were starting to matter, meaning breakout longs were graded down relative to zone-respecting setups.

## The move to actually respect

Narrow rallies — where tech leads and the rest of the tape lags — are structurally different from broad rallies where everything moves. The methodology reads them differently: setups on the leading ticker score higher; setups on the lagging groups (IWM in this case) score lower. That’s not something a subscriber has to remember — the Screener step handles it automatically. But it’s helpful to know that’s what’s happening under the hood.

For the *week*, the right posture was: take the Monday setups the scorecard offered on QQQ/SOXL, dial down size Tuesday, sit out through the FOMC minutes release, and re-engage Wednesday afternoon once the tape had digested the minutes. The Israel-Hezbollah oil risk was the wildcard — any headline that pushed Brent through $90 would have re-priced the whole equity complex, and the discipline was to respect stops on the way out.

## The Signal Layer read

FOMC minutes weeks are exactly the weeks where the scoring engine earns its keep. Discretionary traders overtrade compression because it feels uncomfortable to sit and wait. The scorecard doesn’t feel uncomfortable. If nothing scores ≥8, nothing fires. The engine spends the compression days doing nothing and lets the expansion days pay for the week.

That’s not a strategy you can talk yourself into on the fly. It has to be built into the tool, which is why the tool exists.

More next Friday.
